behind the song

peace for tomorrow is the fourth vssls single, after All My Life (To You I Bring), the closing track of from friendship to filling EP.

The line “my life your vessel” in All My Life (To You I Bring) was written long before the name vssls existed in our minds. And we continue to see how God is weaving everything together — having offered your life as a vessel, having invited the Prince of Peace into your boat, we can rest knowing there is peace for tomorrow.

the car ride

peace for tomorrow was born out of a car ride to and fro a college graduation dinner. The conversation on that car ride traversed uni stress, uncertain future, and what Philippians 4 / Proverbs 3:5-6 actually means. The picture included in the conversation — Peter, in the middle of a storm, responding to Jesus’ call to step out into the wind and the waves, walking above the storm for as long as his eyes were fixed on Jesus.

By the next morning it had become a song — not a concept, not a trend — a discipleship conversation and a prayer for a specific person carrying a specific weight. And now, it is available to everyone carrying some form of weight in that nature.

“Your peace stands guard over all,
I’ll rest know you’re in control”

peace in the Bible

In the Bible, peace — shalom — is not a lack of trouble or a sense of zen. Jesus names it directly, but refocuses our attention:

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

He gives peace not the way the world perceives peace, but as a supernatural promise and a Person standing guard over our hearts and our minds as we give all to him. It comes as a direct result of his government in different spaces — all aspects according to his intention.

There's a kind of peace that doesn't make sense in the room you're standing in.

I've sat with worry that had every single reason to stay. The kind that arrives at 4am and has solid arguments. The kind that follows you into the day and makes itself at home.

Jesus doesn't offer peace in place of hard things. He offers it as something else entirely. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives. The world's version has conditions. It needs the situation to change first — the answer to arrive, the tension to resolve, the thing you're afraid of to go away.

His doesn't.

That's what this song is about. Not pretending tomorrow is safe. Not performing certainty I don't have. Just a slow, stubborn trust that the one who holds tomorrow is the same one who has held every day before it.

I wrote this because I needed it. I still need it.

Maybe you do too.”

the peace segment stepped out in faith

Joel and Luke were quick to respond when they felt God speak to them about vssls — first a resolve to not bury what they have in their hands, then a pivot to host a worship and recording night after God spoke from 2 Kings 4:3 straight into their plan to gather a few friends into a studio.

Eight days before the night, they felt a need to move things around. peace for tomorrow was not part of the plan, and they felt to have a dedicated segment on peace.

They moved on this, and shared about our lives as the boat/vessel, and when we offer it to God and invite him into each space where we live, we can rest in the storm, because even the wind and waves obey.

The segment included Elevation’s Forever YHWH, Young & Free’s P E A C E, Planetshaker’s There Is Peace, before going into their original peace for tomorrow. And from there, their friend who sung for the night went into an unplanned spontaneous moment of Elevation’s Been So Good, naturally leading the room back into vssls’ debut Friend to me.

The overwhelming feedback from the night was that this segment spoke right into the situations of many, with prayer requests for various situations attendees were walking through.

These songs were so powerful, so authentic & so relatable. I felt these songs spoke to some personal battles I am facing, reminding me to find peace with Jesus & not let worry take control of my mind. Thank you for giving the lyrics so I can meditate on them!
I have been encouraged to pause and appreciate God’s faithfulness in where he has me now and not been anxious about next steps.
such beautiful reflective environment. Really felt God’s peace. Loved the repetition of the beautiful verses so we can get more out of each line as it is repeated.
pray that I no longer have anxiety, and can ask God to help me.
pray that he delivers us from anxiety!

step out in faith

Through their first three releases, Joel and Luke have found that the songs God gave them have a way of speaking into their own lives in ways they could neither foresee nor plan for.

peace for tomorrow arrives with that same surprise. The second chorus has become what they find themselves praying in this season:

Where you call I want to follow
I know, there's more in store for tomorrow

So I step out in faith, keep my gaze on your grace
Won't rely on my own strength
But trust in your goodness.

Where you call I want to follow
I know, there's more

in store for tomorrow

So I step out in faith,
keep my gaze on your grace
Won't rely on my own strength
But trust in your goodness.

we’d be honoured to pray for you:

We know peace is something that many people need in their lives. peace for tomorrow is written out of exactly that place — knowing the promise of Philippians 4:6-7, bringing the requests of others we love before the Prince of Peace. we’d be honoured to stand with you in prayer, and to see the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, stand guard over your heart and mind.

receiving from relationship

peace for tomorrow continues from the invitation in from friendship to filling. The peace that Jesus promises is received from within the relationship he offers to all. And the peace that he fills us with is part of the filling that he already invites us into.
